Be Still

I would like to start my blog by saying thank you to everyone who was so kind and supportive after sharing my song last week.  It can be incredibly scary to be so open and vulnerable, but I know that I am not the only one who has walked this painful path, and I want to encourage you and remind you that no matter what you are going through there is a God of hope, love and peace who can help you through (Isaiah 41 v 10).

Today I want to tell you the story behind two more songs from the album.  I shared with you some of the painful journey we walked and the song I wrote called ‘In your arms’.  I also wrote a song called ‘Till the morning comes’ which was written about the same time.  This song was simply about being honest with God, saying “I am shattered and heartbroken yet I will still follow you”  and a simple request that He would help in the darkest night.  Like I mentioned last week we just have to look at the Psalms to see how honest and emotional the author, David, is – no matter what is going on he still trusts and believes.  This is so encouraging, as life is not easy and there are times that are incredibly difficult. We have a God who is with us through it all and wants to hear about our struggles.  I can testify that He was right by me through my darkest night, and helped me walk into a new hope and joy.

“My heart is breaking but I will come to you,
My soul is aching but I will trust in you,
For in the darkest night, You’re there right by my side,
And you help me to see that there will be light as the morning comes”

The first song on the album is called ‘Be still’.  Let me be completely honest – I am utterly useless at being still and stopping. This is an area that God has been working on and challenging me.  I am learning that I need to take time out to be quiet and to seek His face, but to also just be and rest.  I am pretty good at doing life fast and furiously that I find it very hard to switch off and wonder why I so often feel run down.  This song was written after one such week. I had run myself into the ground – my husband and I had taken our son to a local park, but I couldn’t enjoy it because I was so stressed and worked up.  I remember my boys going off to play just to give me a chance to calm down, catch my breath and try to relax.  As I sat by the river, I saw the wind blow through the blossom on the trees, and heard the sound of laughter all around. It was in this time that I felt God whisper his love to me, and the words ‘Be still and know that I am God’.  As I just watched, and listened I was able to appreciate God’s beauty in creation and see His goodness and love.  I felt His gentle invitation to just stop, to simply be and rest in the knowledge that He was God, He was love.  I wanted to put this song at the beginning of the album just to encourage the listener to stop, to take a moment, and know that he is the God of love.

“Take a moment, when life’s so busy,
Just to rest, Just to be,
It’s important, to slow down sometimes,
Just to rest, just to be,
Be still and know that I am God,
Be still and know that I am love”

I continually need to remind myself to be still, and something that I am trying to get better at. I encourage you this week just to find a moment to stop, and to know how much God loves you to rest in his embrace.

God bless you,
